Vidisha (Hindi: ) is a city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India, located near the state capital Bhopal. Vidish is the administrative headquarters of Vidisha District. The city was also known as Bhilsa during the medieval period. Vidisha is located at 2332N 7749E / 23.53N 77.82E / 23.53; 77.82. It has an average elevation of 424metres (1391feet). As of 2001 India census, Vidisha had a population of 125,457. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Vidisha has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 62%. In Vidisha, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Vidisha is exceptionally rich in ancient monuments and historic places. A short distance to the north of the present town are the remains of the ancient town, known as Besnagar.
