Biswanath Chariali (IPA: bswn trl) (Assamese: Bishnath Sariali) is a town and a municipal board in Biswanath district in the state of Assam, India. The town is the district headquarters of Biswanath district, which was created on 15 August 2015. It derives its name from Biswanath Ghat. It holds the first "Clock Tower" (ghanta ghar, normally found in North Indian towns) of Assam followed by the clock tower of Dibrugarh.As of 2001 India census,[1] Biswanath Chariali had a population of 16,830. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Biswanath Chariali has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 85% and female literacy of 75%. 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
