The administrative headquarters of Aligarh District, Aligarh Police Range and Aligarh Division are located there. It has a population of 669,087, according to the 2011 census. The city is mostly known as a university town, alluding to the famous Aligarh Muslim University located there. Several intellectuals have been associated with this university; Sir Muhammad Iqbal, who is also regarded as one of the founding fathers of Pakistan, is the most famous.
