New Delhi  pronunciation (help·info) (Hindi: नई दिल्ली, naī dillī; Urdu: نئی دلّی) is the capital city of India. As the national capital, New Delhi is the seat of executive, legislative and judiciary branches of the Government of India. It also serves as the centre of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. New Delhi is situated within the metropolis of Delhi and is one of the nine districts of Delhi Union Territory. The total area of the city is 1500 km. New Delhi hosts 145 foreign embassies and high commissions. The foundation of the city was laid on December 15, 1911. It was planned by two leading 20th century British architects namely Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker.
