Dhanbad district is one of the twenty-four districts of Jharkhand state, India, and Dhanbad is the administrative headquarters of this district. As of 2011 it is the second most populous district of Jharkhand .[1] In 2006 the Indian government named Dhanbad one of the country's 250 most backward districts .[2] According to the 2011 census Dhanbad district has a population of 2,682,662,[1] roughly equal to the nation of Kuwait[3] or the US state of Nevada.[4] This gives it a ranking of 148th in India .[1] Its population growth rate over the decade 20012011 was 11.91%.[1] Dhanbad has a sex ratio of 908 females for every 1000 males,[1] and a literacy rate of 75.71%.[1]
