BIOGRAPHY

Indira Tiwari (born December 30, 1992) is an Indian film and theatre actress from the city of Bhopal. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barkatullah University and was selected to pursue a Masters degree in acting from India's highly prestigious National School of Drama which she completed in 2018. Her first screen role was as a teenage student in director Prakash Jha's 2011 Bollywood movie Aarakshan in which she appeared alongside screen legend Amitabh Bachchan. She co-stars as the female lead alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui in director Sudhir Mishra's 2020 Netflix original film Serious Men, adapted from the PEN Open Book Award-winning novel by Manu Joseph. Tiwari starred in the 2019 Hindi feature film Nazarband directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay and several shorts including the popular 2017 social commentary about colorism and casteism in India, "Unfair". Her dark skin and voluminous curly hair have been noted as a refreshing change in Bollywood, challenging the Indian film industry's entrenched tradition of casting fair-skinned, straight-haired women as leading ladies, a practice which has been increasingly criticized. She appears in the 2019 music video for Bangalore-based rock band Perfect Strangers' song "Blow Up Doll" which premiered at the Berlin Short Film Festival and was a Rolling Stone India Editors Pick in January 2019. Tiwari is also an accomplished visual artist. She has won numerous awards including the 2007-08 National Bal Shree Honour for Creative Arts presented by Pratibha Patil, the first woman President of India.
