Growing up during the 90’s Basic experienced the awful travesty of war, witnessing the bombing of 1999, her default atmosphere was one of existential fear. In her later years Ivana used her experiences to inspire her work, focusing on the bare truth about societies perceptions of deformity and the human body. Basic says, “Our understanding of a “healthy” body is completely ideological”, and that the socially constructed idea of what a body should be is far from reality. In her pink and periwinkle wax forms Ivana depicts organic masses that look grotesque, “only because weve been socialized to perceive deformity as a failure to perform work and thus contribute to a capitalist system.”
