Raj Kaul

Raj Kaul is the earliest recorded ancestor of Jawahar Lal Nehru. He is believed to have migrated from Kashmir to Delhi in 1716 AD. Like some Kashmiri surnames, he was given a nickname which related to his environment and in his case because the family lived (or once lived) on the banks of a canal (naher in Kashmiri), their family got the name Kaul (Nehru) and eventually like most surnames in Kashmir, the Kaul dropped off and Nehru stayed.According to an excerpt from JAWAHARLAL NEHRU: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY:
