The series primarily revolves around the daily life of the cat Gumball Watterson and his family—adoptive brother Darwin, sister Anais, and parents Nicole and Richard. Gumballs fellow Elmore Junior High students also have frequent recurring roles throughout the series. Creator Ben Bocquelet conceived The Amazing World of Gumball in 2007 while working as a development artist for Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe, and based several of its characters on previous sketches characters he had created for commercials.
