Behind the Candelabra is a 2013 English-language Biography Drama motion picture directed by Steven Soderbergh and produced by Gregory Jacobs, Susan Ekins and Michael Polaire under the banner of HBO Films. Scott Thorson, a young bisexual man raised in foster homes, is introduced to flamboyant entertainment giant Liberace and quickly finds himself in a romantic relationship with the legendary pianist. Swaddled in wealth and excess, Scott and Liberace have a long affair, one that eventually Scott begins to find suffocating. Kept away from the outside world by the flashily effeminate yet deeply closeted Liberace, and submitting to extreme makeovers and even plastic surgery at the behest of his lover, Scott eventually rebels. When Liberace finds himself a new lover, Scott is tossed on the street. He then ks legal redress for what he feels he has lost. But throughout, the bond between the young man and the star never completely tears. Written by Jim Beaver. The screenplay is written by Richard LaGravenese which is inspired from Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace by Scott Thorson Alex Thorleifson. The music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch. Cinematography was done by Peter Andrews and editing by Mary Ann Bernard. The movie has a running time of 118 minutes. It was released on 15th August 2013 and it received positive reviews from critics when it was released. Behind the Candelabra was made on a budget of $23 million and at the box office it grossed only $13 million. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by HBO.
