Two documentary filmmakers chronicle their time in Sonagchi, Calcutta and the relationships they developed with children of prostitutes who work the city's notorious red light district. Born into brothels: calcuttas red light kids stars Shanti Das in the title role along with an ensemble cast including Puja Mukerjee, Avijit Halder, Suchitra, Kochi, Manik and Gour. The music was composed by John Mcdowell. Cinematography was done by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman and editing by Ross Kauffman. The film has a running time of 85 minutes. The film made a box office gross of $3 million. Distribution rights for the motion picture were acquired by THINKFilm. At the 2005 Oscar Awards It won an award for Best Documentary, Features. At the 2004 Sundance Film Festival It also won an award for Documentary.
