Empire of the Sun is a 1987 English-language Drama History movie directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall under the banner of Amblin Entertainment. Based on J. G. Ballard's autobiographical novel, tells the story of a boy, James Graham, whose privileged life is upturned by the Japanese invasion of Shanghai, December 8, 1941. Separated from his parents, he is eventually captured, and taken to Soo Chow confinement camp, next to a captured Chinese airfield. Amidst the sickness and food shortages in the camp, Jim attempts to reconstruct his former life, all the while bringing spirit and dignity to those around him. Written by Jeff Hansen. Empire of the sun features John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, Nigel Havers, Christian Bale, Joe Pantoliano, Leslie Phillips and Steve Bolan. The screenplay is written by Tom Stoppard which is inspired from Empire of the Sun by J. G. Ballard. The music was composed by John Williams. Cinematography was done by Allen Daviau and editing by Michael Kahn. The film has a running time of 154 minutes. It was released on 25th December 1987 in English,Japanese and Cantonese Chinese languages. The Film was successful at box office. Empire of the Sun was made on a budget of $25 million and it was a super hit at box office gross of $66 million. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Warner Bros.
