Kalaapani is a 1996 Malayalam-language Action Drama motion picture written by Priyadarshan Nair and T. Damodaran. The movie is directed by Priyadarshan Nair and produced by Mohanlal Viswanathan and R. Mohan under the banner of Pranavam Arts in collaboration with Shogun Films. Govardhan, a doctor by profession, is wrongly accused of bombing a train and is jailed by the British in Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He witnesses the sufferings of hundreds of Indian prisoners there. Kalaapani stars Prabhu Ganesan, Vineeth, Amrish Puri, John Kolvenbach, Nedumudi Venu, Sreenivasan and Bhagyalakshmi. The screenplay is written by T. Damodaran and Priyadarshan. The music was composed by National Award winner Ilaiyaraaja. Cinematography was done by Santosh Sivan and editing by N. Gopalakrishnan. The movie has a running time of 178 minutes. It was released on 12th April 1996. Kalaapani was made on a budget of ₹2 crore. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Pranamam Pictures.
