Mandi is a 1983 Hindi-language Comedy Drama film written by Shyam Benegal, Shama Zehra Zaidi and Satyadev Dubey. The movie is directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Freni Variava and Lalit M. Bijlani. This classic film is based on a classic Urdu short story 'Aanandi' by Pakistani writer Ghulam Abbas. It deals with a brothel at the heart of a city, in an area that some politicians want for its prime locality. They rally up against the brothel and its inhabitants in the name of morality, and soon everyone in the area jumps on the bandwagon. The politicians offer to put up an alternative residence for the prostitutes, only this place is miles away, isolated from the city. The madam of the house has no choice but to comply, but by the end things take a (logical) turn for the better. After all, men will be men. Written by ajmal hussain. Mandi stars Smita Patil in the lead role along with an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Shabana Azmi, Amrish Puri, Saeed Jaffrey and Om Puri. The screenplay is written by Shyam Benegal which is inspired from Urdu short story Aanandi by Ghulam Abbas. The music was composed by Vanraj Bhatia. Cinematography was done by Ashok Mehta. The motion picture has a running time of 167 min. It was released on 9th May 1983. Distribution rights for the motion picture were acquired by Blaze Entertainment.
