Muthal Mariyathai is a 1985 Tamil-language Drama Family movie written and directed by P Bharathiraja and produced by P Bharathiraja under the banner of Manoj Creations. The story of Muthal Mariyathai was developed from two sources: an English-language film about the relationship between a young girl and an ageing painter, and a story in Jayakanthan's novel Samoogam Enbadhu Naalu Paer about the relationship between a teacher and an administrator with a strained marriage. Muthal mariyathai features Sivaji Ganesan in the title role along with Shivaji Ganesan, Radha Rajasekaran Nair, Sathyaraj, Vadivukkarasi, A.k. Veeraswamy and Ranjini Selvaraj in supporting roles. The screenplay is written by Bharathiraja. The music was composed by National Award winner Ilaiyaraaja. Cinematography was done by B. Kannan and editing by V. Rajagopal and P. Mohan Raj. The film has a running time of 160-161 minutes. It was released on 7th March 1985. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Manoj Creations. At the 1986 South Filmfare Awards It won 2 awards including: Best Actor (Shivaji Ganesan) and Best Actress (Radha Rajasekaran Nair). At the 1986 National Film Awards It also won an award for Best Regional Film (Tamil). At the 1986 National Film Awards It also won an award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.
