Nayakan is a 1987 Tamil-language Crime Drama movie written by Balakumaran, Rajashri Raju and Mani Ratnam. The movie is directed by Mani Ratnam and produced by Muktha Srinivasan, Muktha V. Ramaswamy and G. Venkateswaran under the banner of Muktha Films. It revolves around the gradual transformation of Velu Naicker from an ordinary slum dweller to a highly respected don. Nayakan stars Kamal Haasan in the lead role along with an ensemble cast including Saranya Ponvannan, Delhi Ganesh, Janagaraj, Karthika Pkr Nair, Nasser and Tinnu Anand. The music was composed by National Award winner Ilaiyaraaja. Cinematography was done by P. C. Sreeram and editing by B. Lenin and V. T. Vijayan. The film has a running time of 155 minutes. It was released on 21st October 1987. Nayakan was made on a budget of ₹1 crore. Distribution rights for the movie were acquired by GV Films. At the 1988 National Film Awards It won an award for Best Cinematography. At the 1988 National Film Awards It also won 3 awards including: Best Actor (Kamal Haasan), Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
