The Freshman is a 1990 English-language Comedy Crime movie written and directed by Andrew Bergman and produced by Mike Lobell. A NYC film school student accepts a job with a local mobster who resembles a famous cinema godfather and who takes the young man under his wing, after demanding total loyalty. The freshman stars Marlon Brando in the lead role along with an ensemble cast including Matthew Broderick, Bruno Kirby, Penelope Ann Miller, Frank Whaley, Jon Polito and Paul Benedict. The music was composed by David Newman. Cinematography was done by William A. Fraker and editing by Barry Malkin. The film has a running time of 102 minutes. It was released on 27th July 1990 and it received positive reviews from critics when it was released and became successful at box office. The Freshman was made on a budget of $12 million and it was a hit at box office gross of $21 million. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by TriStar Pictures.
