The House of the Spirits is a 1993 English-language Drama Romance movie written by Isabel Allende and Bille August. The movie is directed by Bille August and produced by Bernd Eichinger under the banner of Constantin Film. Chile, second half of the 20th century. The poor Esteban marries Clara and they get a daughter, Blanca. Esteban works hard and eventually gets money to buy a hacienda, eventually to become a local patriarch. He becomes very conservative and is feared by his workers. When Blanca grows up, she falls in love with a young revolutionary, Pedro, who urges the workers to fight for socialism. It is unavoidable that Pedro and Esteban are pitted against each other. Esteban tries to stop the love affair between Pedro and his daughter by all means possible but soon Blanca becomes pregnant and has a daughter. The void between father and daughter ms unbridgeable when Blanca moves in with Pedro. Written by Mattias Thuresson. The house of the spirits stars Meryl Streep in the lead role along with an ensemble cast including Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder, Antonio Banderas, Armin Mueller-stahl and Mar A Conchita Alonso. The music was composed by Hans Zimmer. Cinematography was done by J rgen Persson and editing by Janus Billeskov Jansen. The film has a running time of 140 minutes. The House of the Spirits was made on a budget of $40 million and at the box office it grossed only $6 million. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Miramax Films.
