To Be Number One is a 1991 Cantonese-language Biography Crime film directed by Poon Man-kit and produced by Stephen Shiu under the banner of Golden Harvest in collaboration with Johnny Mak Production Co. Ltd. The story of Ho, a chinese peasant/slave worker who escapes to Hong Kong and becomes one of the most feared crime bosses in Hong Kong. To be number one stars Ray Lui in the title role along with an ensemble cast including Kent Cheng, Cecilia Yip, Amy Yip, Waise Lee, Kenneth Tsang and Lawrence Ng. The screenplay is written by Stephen Shiu and Johnny Mak. The music was composed by Joseph Chan. Cinematography was done by Peter Pau and editing by Poon Hung. The film has a running time of 143 minutes. It was released on 15th April 1991. The movie made a box office gross of $38 million. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Golden Harvest.
