Jamtara is a city and a notified area in Jamtara district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Jamtara is the district headquarters. Jamtara is located at 2357N 8648E / 23.95N 86.8E / 23.95; 86.8. It has an average elevation of 155metres (508feet). It is located 250km from Ranchi, the state capital. It has an area of 1801km. Distance from other major cities like from Howrah is 260km and from Patna is 290km. It came into existence on 26 April 2001. The small district of Jharkhand state consists of only 4 blocks. It was created by carving out four blocks from DUMKA District. Other towns in this district are Karmatar, Nala, Kundahit, Narayanpur and Fatehpur. The fast flowing Ajay River passes through the district and verdant forest areas cover the district. Unexplored and unspoiled natural beauty is the trademark of the district.
