Khatra (Bengali: ) is headquarters of a sub-division of Bankura District, in the state of West Bengal, India. Khatra is in the south-west of Bankura District, which is itself to the west of the southern part of West Bengal. Khatra is located at 2259N 8651E / 22.98N 86.85E / 22.98; 86.85, and has an average elevation of 154m (505ft). Approximately 30% of the population of the Khatra sub-division live below the official poverty line, and there was no sub-divisional hospital until 2006. After delays due to water shortages, the hospital was opened by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, on November 18, 2006. The Golden Jubilee of the Kangsabati movement was celebrated in Khatra on August 3031, 2006. The Bratachari movement, pioneered by Gurusaday Dutt, has much support in the area.
