Machhali Shahar is a city and a administrative subdivision(Tehsil Headquarter) in Jaunpur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.Machhali Shahar is located at 25.68N 82.42E.[1] It has an average elevation of 84 metres (275 feet). It has been assigned 222143 pincode by Indian postal services. As of 2011 India census,[2] Machhlishahr had a population of 26107. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Literacy rate is Machhlishahr city is 77.43%higher than the national average of 59.5%. male literacy is around 83.85%,while female literacy rate is 70.86%. In Machhlishahr, 18% of the population is under 6 years of age. Represented in the U.P. State Assembly by MLA Subhash Pandey of the BSP. Machhali Shahar was known as Machchhika Khand during the time of Gautam Buddha. It was one of the active places used by Budhhist monks (including Lord Gautam Buddha) during the period of Gautam Buddha.
