About Obra

Obra is a town and Assembly constituency of Uttar Pradesh which is recently upgraded from the stature of Nagar Panchayat in Sonebhadra district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Obra is located 120 km from Varanasi at the Banks of Renu & Sone River with population of 52,398 As per 2001 India Census. Obra is located at 24.42N 82.98E.[2] It has an average elevation of 170 metres (557 feet). As of 2011 India census,[3] Obra had a 46,574 of which 24,804 are males while 21,770 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Obra has an average literacy rate of 83.90%, higher than the state average of 67.68%: male literacy is around 91%, and female literacy is 76%. In Obra, 12.36% of the population is under 6 years of age. Obra stands by the side of the Renu & Sone rivers, a tributaries of the Ganges. The environment around nicely supports the Thermal and Hydroelectric (Hydel) Power Station. The thermal station has 13 units with the total capacity of 1550 MW and the Hydel has a maximum capacity of 99 MW. but the power plant has passed an upgrade of 2 more unit with a power generation capacity of 660MW which is expected to be ready by 2050. One of the major achievements for the plant is that it was the Asia's number 1 Thermal Power production plant in the 1980s.
