About Orathanad ( Muthambapuram )

Orathanad (Tamil: ) also known as Muthambapuram, is one of the eight talukas of the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu located between the cities of Thanjavur and Pattukkottai. From 1674 until 1820 the city was part of the Maratha Empire. According to legend, Queen Muthambaal retrieved treasure from a pond by sacrificing her life from which the king made more than 40 "Anna Sathira" in Orathanadu taluk. Orattanadu has an average elevation of 2m (6.6ft) and lies on the south bank of the Kaveri River, 223 miles (359km) south of Chennai. On November27, 2008 Orathanadu broke the 65-year old record for the highest rainfall in 24 hours in Tamil Nadu, registering 660 millimetres (26in) and exceeding the 570 millimetres (22in) registered by Cuddalore on May18, 1943.
