Orathanad also known as Muthambapuram, is one of the eight talukas of the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu located between the cities of Thanjavur and Pattukkottai. From 1674 until 1820 the city was part of the Maratha Empire. According to legend, Queen Muthambaal retrieved treasure from a pond by sacrificing her life from which the king made more than 40 "Anna Sathira" in Orathanadu taluk.
