About Polur

Polur (Tamil: ) is a largest township in Tiruvannamalai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It lies on the National Highway NH234. (Mangalore - Villupuram). Polur is located at 1230N 7908E / 12.5N 79.13E / 12.5; 79.13. It has an average elevation of 171metres (561ft). Apart from many places of worships, Polur has a huge mountain temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha(the god with lion head and men's body, which indicates that human nature relationship by Hindu dharma). This mountain temple was historically referred to as "SAMPATHGIRI", which in Sanskrit means "Mountain of Wealth". From the top of the hill, one can have a clear view of the Tiruvannamalai Arunachala Hill. A small hill named "KUNNATTHUR Hill" is also seen on the outskirts of Polur. The same term was referred in Tamil as "PORULUR" literally translating to PORUL OOR (Place of Wealth) now referred as POLUR.
