Punganur (Telugu: )i is a town and a Municipality in Chittoor district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Punganur is located at 132200N 783500E / 13.3667N 78.5833E / 13.3667; 78.5833. It has an average elevation of 730 meters (2398 feet).Punganur is an important junction for the arterial roads to Madanapalle ( and onwards to Anantapur ), Malur ( and onwards to Kolar and Bangalore), Chittoor ( and onwards to Tirupati & Katpadi ), and also to Kuppam ( and onwards to Dharmapuri, Salem). It is probably one of the oldest towns in this region and records indicate that this region indulged in trading with the Romans. As of 2001 India census, Punganur had a population of 44,320. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Punganur has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 71%, and female literacy is 56%.
