Samastipur (Hindi: ) is a town and a municipality in Samastipur district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the headquarter of Samastipur district . It is situated on the bank of Budhi Gandak River or Gandaki River.
As of 2011 census, Samastipur had a population of 4,254,782. Males constitute 52.4% of the population and females 47.6%. Samastipur has an average literacy rate of 74%, equal to the national average of 74.04%: male literacy is at 78%, and female literacy is at 69%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. samastipur is a part of mithilanchal division.
Samastipur is the birth place of the famous Kisan leader and freedom fighter Pandit Yamuna Karjee. He was a resident of Pusa, Samastipur and was associated with Swami Sahajanand Saraswati in the Kisan Movement during the freedom struggle.
