Sohagpur is a town and a nagar panchayat in Hoshangabad district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Its Also known for capital of Gondvana Princely state ruled under Nawab Navi us Jafar Alvi in british India. Sohagpur is located at 2242N 7812E / 22.7N 78.2E / 22.7; 78.2. It has an average elevation of 323metres (1059feet). Palakmati river,is the local river here. As of 2001 India census, Sohagpur had a population of 229,734. The majority of the population lives rurally (107,395) whereas only 122,339 live in urban areas. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. The town gets its name from Suhagpur-Sobhagyapur-Shonitpur.
