Sonamukhi is a town and a municipality in Bankura District in the Indian state of West Bengal. Sonamukhi is located at 2318N 8725E / 23.3N 87.42E / 23.3; 87.42. It has an average elevation of 66metres . As of 2001 India census, Sonamukhi had a population of 27,348. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Sonamukhi has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Sonamukhi, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. In September 2005, South Eastern Railway threw open passenger services on the 41km long Bankura-Sonamukhi broad gauge section, being the first phase of the Bankura-Damodar River Railway project. BDR project entails extension from Sonamukhi to Raina in the Sonamukhi-Raina section.
