The name of the city was derived from the name of a fish, "tum", which was found here earlier. Tumsar was previously known as Kuber Nagari. the city speak Marathi language as their mothertongue Tumsar is located at 2123N 7944E / 21.38N 79.73E / 21.38; 79.73. It has an average elevation of 272metres (892feet). Tumsar is approximately 6km from the Vainganga river, 30km from Bhandara, 95km From Nagpur, 65km from Gondia and 300km from Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh). While it is 700km from Bhopal, 920km from Delhi, 1000km from Kolkata and 980km from Mumbai and Indore respectively. The town has a number of lakes. Long back Tumsar had severe drinking water crisis but later drinking water from River VainGanga was fetched to the town.
