Neel Akasher Neechey is a 1959 Bengali-language Drama movie written by Mrinal Sen and Based On The Short Story chini Feriwala Written By Mahadevi Varma. The movie is directed by Mrinal Sen and produced by Hemanta Mukherjee and Hemanta Bela Production. Set in 1930s, the film tells the story of an honest Chinese hawker, Wang Lu,who sells silk in Calcutta's streets while refusing to get involved in the opium trade run by his fellow countrymen. Neel akasher neechey stars Kali Banerjee in the title role along with an ensemble cast including Manju Dey, Bikash Roy, Smriti Biswas, Suruchi Sengupta, Ajit Chatterjee and Rasaraj Chakraborthy. The music was composed by National Award winner Hemanta Mukherjee along with Hemant Kumar. Cinematography was done by Sailaja Chatterjee. The film has a running time of 133 minutes. It was released on 20th February 1959.
