Ben-Hur is a 1959 English-language Adventure Drama motion picture directed by William Wyler and produced by Sam Zimbalist under the banner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Judah Ben-Hur lives as a rich Jewish prince and merchant in Jerusalem at the beginning of the 1st century. Together with the new governor his old friend Messala arrives as commanding officer of the Roman legions. At first they are happy to meet after a long time but their different politic views separate them. During the welcome parade a roof tile falls down from Judah's house and injures the governor. Although Messala knows they are not guilty, he sends Judah to the galleys and throws his mother and sister into prison. But Judah swears to come back and take revenge. Written by Matthias Scheler. Ben-hur stars Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Haya Harareet, Stephen Boyd, Hugh Griffith, Martha Scott and Nazzareno Zamperla. The screenplay is written by Karl Tunberg which is inspired from Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ by General Lew Wallace. The music was composed by Mikl S R Zsa. Cinematography was done by Robert L. Surtees and editing by John D. Dunning and Ralph E. Winters. The film has a running time of 212 minutes. It was released on 29th January 1960. Ben-Hur was made on a budget of $100 million and at the box office it grossed only $94 million. Distribution rights for the movie were acquired by Loew's.
