Gudur (Telugu: ) is third largest town and municipality,in Nellore District in the state of Andhra Pradesh. In India, Gudur is the largest division in Nellore and a very old municipality. The mica belt around Gudur is considered the 2nd largest in the country. The mica deposits are located in a 1000sq.km. area surrounding Gudur. As of 2001 India census, Gudur Mandal had a population of 114356. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%.Gudur Town had a population of 68,782. Gudur has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 63%. In Gudur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. The roots of the town began during the Chola Dynasty. It is believed that Cholas constructed Alaganatha Swamy temple. Later the town developed around this temple. It is the largest temple in Gudur.
