Hisar was founded in 1354 CE, as Hissar-e-Firoza by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, who reigned over the Sultanate of Delhi from 1351 to 1388.. The word Hisar derives from a Arabic word meaning fortress. Firoz Shah also brought the waters of the Yamuna river here by means of canal. A holy devotee predicted his accession to the throne and at his request the canal was made.
