Sahebganj (also spelt as Sahibganj) is the district headquarters of Sahebganj district of Jharkhand state, India. Sahebganj means a place (ganj) of masters (sahebs or sahibs). The place is likely to have gotten its name because a number of English and other European people lived and worked in and around the railway station during the British Raj. Nevertheless, the district has remained inhabited by tribal people since time immemorial. The town is cosmopolitan, with people from Bihar, Bengal, and Jharkhand; and refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Sahebganj is located at 2515N 8739E / 25.25N 87.65E / 25.25; 87.65. It has an average elevation of 16metres (52feet). As of 2011 India census, Sahebganj had a population of 1,150,038. Males constitute 51.33% of the population and females 48.66%.
