The Stars Look Down is a 1940 English-language Drama movie directed by Carol Reed and produced by Isadore Goldsmith and Maurice J. Wilson under the banner of Grafton Films. Davey Fenwick (Sir Michael Redgrave) leaves his mining village on a university scholarship intent on returning to better support the miners against the owners. But he falls in love with Jenny (Margaret Lockwood) who gets him to marry her and return home as local schoolteacher before finishing his degree. Davey finds he is ill-at-ease in his role, the so when he realizes Jenny still loves her former boyfriend. When he finds that his father and the other miners are going to have to continue working on a possibly deadly coal seam he decides to act. Written by Jeremy Perkins {J-26}. The stars look down stars Michael Redgrave in the title role along with an ensemble cast including Margaret Lockwood, Emlyn Williams, Nancy Price, Allan Jeayes, Edward Rigby and Linden Travers. The screenplay is written by A. J. Cronin and J.B. Williams which is inspired from The Stars Look Down by A. J. Cronin. The music was composed by Hans May. Cinematography was done by Mutz Greenbaum and Ernest Palmer and editing by Reginald Beck. The motion picture has a running time of 110 minutes. It was released on 16th September 1940 and it received positive reviews from critics when it was released. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
