Kalyani (Bengali: ) is a city and a municipality in Nadia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. It is a planned town and an important centre of education. It can be considered a 'university town' with two universities and many colleges. The Kalyani Municipality received the best municipality award in 2004 along with the Durgapur Municipality of Burdwan district and Ingrejbajar Municipality of Malda district.. Another feather in Kalyani's cap was added when it won the prestigious award of Best Municipality in India,in the year 2009. Kalyani, located in Nadia district in the state of West Bengal, is a relatively young town. During the Second World War, Kalyani, was the site of a military airbase. Hangars and other reminders of the air-field are still visible in the 'A' Block and some areas around Kalyani University, whose buildings were built on or over the runways.
