Bagalkot or Bagalkote is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. Bagalkot is the district headquarters of the Bagalkot district. It is one of the major towns in North Karnataka. According to stone inscriptions in the surrounding area, the town's name was formerly Bagadige. According to legend, the town was gifted to the Bajantries . Consequently the place acquired the name Bagdikot, which later became Bagalkot. Bagalkot remained under successive dominions of Vijayanagar emperors, Peshwas, Hyderali of Mysore, Maratha rulers, and finally the British in 1818.
