Madukkarai is a suburb of Coimbatore city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the gateway to Coimbatore city from Kerala State and is located around 12km from the Kerala border. Madukkarai Name Origin: The name "Madukkarai" originated from the colloquial use of the words "Mathil"(means Great Wall in Tamil) + "Karai"(means Shore in Tamil) as it is situated along the hill sides of the Western Ghats. As of 2001 India census, Madukkarai had a population of 25,733. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Madukkarai has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 64%.
