Blood and Sand is a 1922 Silent-language Drama Romance motion picture directed by Fred Niblo and produced by Fred Niblo and Jesse L. Lasky under the banner of Famous Players-Lasky in collaboration with Paramount Pictures. Juan is the son of a poor widow in Seville. Against his mother's wishes he pursues a career as toreador. He rapidly gains national prominence, and takes his childhood sweetheart Carmen as his bride. He meets the Marquis' daughter Dona Sol, and finds himself in the awkward position of being in love with two women, which threatens the stability of his family and his position in society. He finds interesting parallels in the life of the infamous bandit Plumitas when they eventually meet by chance. Written by Ed Sutton. Blood and sand features Rudolph Valentino, Lila Lee, Nita Naldi, Rosa Rosanova, Walter Long, Leo White and Louise Emmons. The screenplay is written by June Mathis which is inspired from The novel Blood and Sand by Vicente Blasco Ib ez and the play by Thomas Cushing. Cinematography was done by Alvin Wyckoff and editing by Dorothy Arzner. The movie has a running time of 80-9 reels. It was released on 5th August 1922 in Silent and English intertitles languages. The motion picture made a box office gross of $1 million. Distribution rights for the motion picture were acquired by Paramount Pictures.
