The Ten Commandments is a 1923 Silent-language Biography Drama movie directed by Cecil B. Demille and produced by Cecil B. Demille under the banner of Famous Players-Lasky Corporation. The first part tells the story of Moses leading the Jews from Egypt to the Promised Land, his receipt of the tablets and the worship of the golden calf. The second part shows the efficacy of the commandments in modern life through a story set in San Francisco. Two brothers, rivals for the love of Mary, also come into conflict when John discovers Dan used shoddy materials to construct a cathedral. Written by Ed Stephan. The ten commandments stars Theodore Roberts in the title role along with an ensemble cast including Charles De Roche, Estelle Taylor, Julia Faye, Richard Dix, Rod La Rocque and Leatrice Joy. Cinematography was done by Bert Glennon, Peverel Marley, Archibald Stout and J.F. Westerberg and editing by Anne Bauchens. The motion picture has a running time of 136 minutes. It was released on 23rd November 1923 in Silent and English intertitles languages. The Film was successful at box office. The Ten Commandments was made on a budget of $1 million and it was a super hit at box office gross of $4 million. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by Paramount Pictures.
