Kundun is a 1998 English-language Documentary Drama movie written by Melissa Mathison and directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Barbara De Fina under the banner of Touchstone Pictures in collaboration with StudioCanal. Kundun stars Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, Gyurme Tethong, Tulku Jamyang Kunga Tenzin, Tenzin Yeshi Paichang, The Dalai Lama, Roger Deakins and Tashi Dhondup. The music was composed by Philip Glass. Cinematography was done by Roger Deakins and editing by Thelma Schoonmaker. The film has a running time of 134 minutes. It was released on 16th January 1998. Kundun was made on a budget of $28 million and at the box office it grossed only $5 million. Distribution rights for the motion picture were acquired by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. The Tibetans refer to the Dalai Lama as 'Kundun', which means 'The Presence'. He was forced to escape from his native home, Tibet, when communist China invaded and enforced an oppressive regime upon the peaceful nation. The Dalai Lama escaped to India in 1959 and has been living in exile in Dharamsala ever since.
